Notable & Historical

A Legacy of Heritage and Community

Strathcona Park & Indigenous History

Located along Strathcona Road, Strathcona Park is a tranquil waterfront retreat with a rich historical connection. In August 2000, Simon Fraser University archaeology students collaborated with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation to conduct an excavation in the park. Their work revealed a significant Indigenous midden, underscoring the Tsleil-Waututh people’s enduring presence and stewardship of the land.

Gus Muri: Entrepreneur & Community Builder

A pivotal figure in the area’s growth, Gus Muri arrived from Saskatchewan in the 1940s and made a lasting impact on Cove Cliff and Strathcona. Starting with a thriving blacktop paving business, Gus expanded into real estate, purchasing land at the corner of Mount Seymour Parkway and Deep Cove Road. There, he established a service station, which later became a hardware and lumber supply store, a staple for the growing community.

Gus’s sons, Dennis and Glen, carried on the family business, contributing to its success. His legacy of community service lives on through his granddaughter, Lisa Muri, a dedicated District of North Vancouver councillor.
