Notable & Historical

A Rich Legacy by the Water

From Industrial Hub to Residential Paradise

Dollarton was once a thriving industrial site, with the Robert Dollar Company’s sawmill operating for 25 years. While the mill is long gone, remnants of this past—such as the Cedar Mills beehive burner foundation in Cates Park—serve as a reminder of the community’s roots.

Malcolm Lowry & The Literary Legacy of Dollarton

Dollarton has also made its mark in literary history. In the 1940s, acclaimed writer Malcolm Lowry lived in a series of beachfront shacks in what is now Cates Park. During his time here, he completed drafts of his famous novel Under the Volcano. His legacy is commemorated by:

  • A monument in Cates Park, honouring his literary contributions.
  • The former “Under the Volcano” music and poetry festival, which celebrated his impact on literature and the arts.

Dollarton Village’s Growth Over the Decades

  • 1962 – The first shopping centre opens as Dollar Shopping Centre, later renamed Dollarton Village Shopping Centre in 1992.
  • 1953 – Seymour Golf & Country Club officially opens, becoming a staple for golf lovers on the North Shore.

From its humble beginnings as a sawmill town to its transformation into a scenic waterfront neighbourhoodDollarton continues to be a cherished part of the North Shore Edge.
