Notable & Historical

A Legacy of Resilience and Community

Lynnmour’s history reflects its transformation from a quiet North Shore enclave to a vibrant and accessible community, while honouring the landmarks and events that shaped its identity.

The Coach House Inn: A Hub of Hospitality

Established in 1964 at 700 Old Lillooet Road, the Coach House Inn was a cornerstone of Lynnmour’s past. Its Tudor-style architecture and lively atmosphere made it a popular destination for dining, entertainment, and events. The property featured a restaurant, pub, beauty parlour, and banquet spaces, and was famed for hosting the World Belly Flop and Cannonball Diving Championships in the late 1970s. These whimsical events drew thousands of spectators and even international media attention from outlets like NBC. Though the inn was demolished in the 1990s, its spirit of hospitality lives on in the Holiday Inn & Suites, which now serves as a modern hub for visitors to the North Shore.

The Second Narrows Bridge Collapse: A Community Shaped by Tragedy

Lynnmour’s history is indelibly tied to one of Vancouver’s most tragic events—the collapse of the Second Narrows Bridge during construction on June 17, 1958.

As workers laboured to complete the bridge, two spans of the structure suddenly gave way, plunging into the Burrard Inlet. The disaster claimed the lives of 19 workers and seriously injured 20 others, leaving an indelible mark on the local community. The tragedy highlighted the inherent dangers of infrastructure projects and led to greater emphasis on worker safety in Canada.

Completed in 1960, the bridge was renamed the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing in 1994 to honour those who lost their lives. Today, it stands as both a vital transportation link and a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the workers who built it.
