About
Maplewood Flats Conservation Area is a beautiful 4.0-km loop trail located in the North Shore Edge offering a peaceful, family-friendly nature experience on. Managed by the Wild Bird Trust of British Columbia, Maplewood Flats is the only dedicated bird sanctuary on the North Shore, home to over 200 species of birds and rich with natural beauty year-round. Considered an easy walking route, this trail takes about 44 minutes to complete and is open to visitors in all seasons. Dogs, cycling, and running are not permitted, to protect sensitive wildlife habitats and ensure a tranquil experience for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
Special Features
Maplewood Flats features a well-maintained network of smooth gravel paths, perfect for strollers, wheelchairs, and walkers of all ages. With minimal elevation changes and gentle grades, it’s one of the most accessible natural spaces on the North Shore. Numerous lookouts offer breathtaking views of Burrard Inlet, nearby mountains, and of course, ideal vantage points for wildlife and birdwatching. You'll also discover unique art installations near the entrance, adding a creative element to the natural landscape. A small steeper optional trail branches off near the centre of the loop but can be bypassed for a fully accessible experience. Parking is available along the entrance road and in a large lot on Dollarton Highway, with a safe, separated access trail leading directly to the refuge entrance.
North Shore Edge Tip
Maplewood Flats is the perfect spot for a quiet nature break, so bring binoculars to make the most of your visit — you never know which rare bird you might see! With plenty of benches and lookout points, it’s also a great place to pause for a snack or a warm drink while soaking up the views. All visitors must stay on the marked trails to protect the delicate ecosystems and wildlife — stepping off the paths can cause serious damage to this unique habitat. And as always, leave no trace to help keep Maplewood Flats safe, clean, and peaceful for everyone.
