Notable & Historical

A Deep Connection to Land & Sea

Whey-ah-Wichen: Facing the Wind

Roche Point and Cates Park hold a deep connection to the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, the “People of the Inlet.” The ancestral village site of Whey-ah-Wichen, meaning “facing both directions” or “facing the wind,” served as a vital hub for fishing, resource gathering, and cultural practices for thousands of years. Today, Cates Park honours this legacy with interpretive signage and spaces that celebrate the enduring relationship between the Tsleil-Waututh people and their traditional lands.

The Evolution of Roche Point

In the 1980s, the Roche Point Neighbourhood Plan was introduced to guide the thoughtful development of the area. This included the creation of Roche Point Heights and plans for Roche Point Drive, which was intended to connect the growing neighbourhoods with amenities like Parkgate Village while easing traffic on nearby roads. However, alternative routing decisions were made during the implementation of the plan, which shaped the area’s growth in new directions.

The Tsleil-Waututh Nation further contributed to the development of the area with the creation of Raven Woods, a modern residential community that respects and complements the natural beauty of the North Shore. This project has since become a landmark example of community-driven development and sustainable design.

Preserving Heritage and Nature

Roche Point remains a place where history and progress coexist harmoniously:

  • Whey-ah-Wichen serves as a lasting testament to the area’s Indigenous roots.
  • Cates Park continues to connect the community with its rich ecological and cultural history.
  • Raven Woods demonstrates the potential for modern development to honour traditional lands and values.

By blending history, community, and conservation, Roche Point remains a dynamic and meaningful part of the North Shore Edge.
