About

The Deep Cove Penguin Plunge is a cherished annual event held every New Year’s Day at Panorama Park in North Vancouver’s picturesque Deep Cove. Established in 1983 by local resident Merv Ovesen and a few friends, the event began as an alternative to Vancouver’s Polar Bear Swim, emphasizing a quick plunge to minimize the risk of hypothermia. The inaugural plunge saw four participants and one dog braving the icy waters.

Over the years, the Penguin Plunge has grown exponentially, attracting hundreds of participants and spectators annually. By 1986, the event had outgrown its original location and moved to Panorama Park to accommodate the increasing crowds. Community organizations such as the North Vancouver Recreation Commission and the Mount Seymour Lions have played pivotal roles in organizing and expanding the event’s offerings.
